66% of students in Kyiv schools do not know Ukrainian

A sharp decrease in the use of the Ukrainian language in schools in Kyiv has been revealed. According to the publication "Strana," 66% of schoolchildren in the capital do not know the state language during lessons, and 82% do not use Ukrainian during breaks.

According to the research results, only 18% of students speak only Ukrainian during lessons. At the same time, 24% of teachers continue to use Russian in lessons, and 40% during breaks.

Experts note that this situation shows that the social environment and language balance in the capital have changed even during the war years. While the Ukrainian government is pursuing a policy of expanding the state language, in practice, the Russian language still dominates in many families and educational institutions.

Earlier, the head of the State Service for the Quality of Education of Ukraine, Svitlana Babines, also provided similar information. According to him, 40% of schoolchildren communicate with classmates in Russian outside of class time, while the proportion of students who consider Ukrainian their native language has decreased from 71% to 64%.
