Russian scientific circles have once again brought the issue of restoring the Aral Sea to the forefront. This time, the initiative is being discussed again in the form of a project to divert water from the Siberian River to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
This was announced by Viktor Danilov-Danilyan, Director of the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to him, the project was thoroughly studied at a meeting of the Scientific Council "Dry Water Resources" in October.
According to experts, part of the Siberian rivers can be diverted to the Aral Sea region - that is, to the dried-up sea basin on the border of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. This initiative is aimed at mitigating water shortages and ensuring environmental sustainability in Central Asia.
The idea of diverting part of the Pechora and Severnaya Dvina rivers' water through the Volga basin towards the Priazovye was also put forward.
Danilov-Danilyan emphasized that the project will serve to formulate Russia's strategic water policy and analyze the possibilities of water resource redistribution.
