Heavy rains observed yesterday and today in several regions of Malaysia caused severe flooding, putting more than 11,000 citizens in serious condition.
It is reported that floods of this scale are frequently recorded in the eastern coastal part of the country during the monsoon season, which lasts from October to March each year. Every year, thousands of people are relocated to temporary shelters for safety reasons.
According to the National Disaster Management Agency, as of 06:00 (03:00 Tashkent time) on Monday, November 24, a total of 11,009 people from 3,839 families were affected in the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Terengganu, and Selangor.
The most damaged area is the state of Kelantan, which borders Thailand. Here, 8,228 residents were affected by the disaster. 60 emergency shelters have been set up for the victims, including a school, public buildings, and temples.
In addition, on November 23, an avalanche occurred in the village of Van Kelian, located in the northwest of Perlis state, due to continuous rain, causing problems for about 400 people. They had to be temporarily housed in mosques in high-altitude areas.
As a reminder, it was recently reported that an avalanche caused by heavy rainfall in Indonesia's Central Java region also turned into a major tragedy, killing 30 people and missing nearly 40.
As natural disasters become more frequent, the need for safety and precautionary measures in Southeast Asia is growing even more.
