An elderly man living in Vyaponskaya, Nara Prefecture, was poisoned by mushrooms deemed edible by artificial intelligence. This was reported by Japan Today.
The 70-year-old Japanese man was engaged in mushroom picking in October. During the plowing, he encountered unfamiliar, suspicious mushrooms. He initially wanted to appeal to the staff of the local botanical garden, but at that time there were no staff there.
Then the man decided to contact the help of a chatbot. He took a picture of the mushrooms and asked the AI if they were edible. The neural network replied that the mushrooms in the picture were edible veshenka or shiitake. Following the digital assistant's recommendation, the man prepared and ate them.
However, shortly after, the Japanese man began to feel unwell and went to the hospital. The examination revealed that he had consumed tsukietake (moon-night mushroom), a poisonous species often confused with safe mushrooms.
