Explosion before evening prayers: bloody tragedy at Nigerian mosque

An explosion at a mosque in Mayduguri, a city in northeastern Nigeria, has claimed the lives of at least seven people. The BBC reported this.

According to the information, the incident occurred on December 24 around 18:00 in a crowded mosque located in the Gamboro market area, before the evening prayer. Witnesses say the explosion occurred suddenly, causing great panic inside the mosque.

Police spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed the incident, stating that bomb specialists are currently working in the area. Some witnesses suggested that the attack might have been carried out by a suicide bomber. Officials say the number of wounded is still unknown, but it could be several dozen.

Local police chief Babakura Kolo stated that the incident is being viewed as a terrorist act. However, no armed group has yet claimed responsibility for this attack.

Recall that Mayduguri is the center of the state of Borno, which has been known for years as a territory associated with the activities of terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province. At the same time, the city had been experiencing a relatively peaceful period in recent years.
