Regarding Venezuela, the US is interested in oil, not cocaine

Although the US actions in Venezuela are officially interpreted as a fight against drug trafficking, it is said that there are completely different interests behind this process. According to experts, the main goal for Washington is not drugs, but Venezuela's rich oil reserves and strengthening its influence in the Western Hemisphere.
Benjamin Smith, a professor at the University of Warwick and author of a book on the history of drug trafficking, supports this point of view. He emphasized that the US operations against Venezuela are driven by geopolitical and economic interests rather than the fight against drug trafficking.
At the same time, the professor is skeptical of accusations that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is involved in drug trafficking. In his opinion, these claims may be used more as a means of political pressure.
According to the expert, explaining the situation around Venezuela solely by the issue of drug trafficking is a one-sided approach, and in reality, oil interests and the desire to establish a new political order in the region are decisive factors.
