Maduro rejects drug charges, says he was ‘kidnapped’
Former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro pleaded not guilty in a U.S. court to criminal charges related to drug trafficking. Speaking in a federal court in New York, he said his arrest was illegal and that he considers himself to have been “kidnapped.”

During the court hearing, Maduro appeared in shackles and was informed of the charges through an interpreter. He faces several serious charges, including leading an international drug trafficking network and weapons possession. His wife, Kilia Flores, also rejected the charges in court. The next hearing has been scheduled for March.

Maduro’s arrest has escalated the political situation in Venezuela. In Caracas, Vice President Rodriguez was sworn in as the country’s interim president. Government institutions continue to function, but uncertainty remains about the country’s future.

U.S. officials said the action was carried out as part of the fight against drug trafficking. At the same time, several countries and international organizations have expressed concern over a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty. The incident has sparked wide debate on the international stage.
