Canada Accepted Chinese EVs, U.S. Opposes

U.S. officials criticized Canada’s decision to allow electric vehicles made in China into its market. They said the decision could have negative consequences for Canada in the future. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the decision a mistake and said they may regret it later.
Although Canada imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024, it recently allowed the import of up to 49,000 cars. U.S. officials are concerned that this decision could increase the influence of Chinese products in North America. They also emphasized that these vehicles will not be allowed into the U.S. market.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the decision would not directly harm American car manufacturers. According to him, these cars will go to Canada and will not be allowed into the U.S. He also said that the safety and information system requirements for vehicles in the U.S. make it difficult for Chinese electric vehicles to enter the market.
U.S. politicians and some lawmakers consider Chinese electric vehicles a threat to the country. They believe it is important to protect the American auto industry. Therefore, Canada’s decision is being criticized by the U.S., and the issue is expected to be discussed in the near future.
