US “secretly” sought information on sites in Greenland

According to Denmark’s Berlingske newspaper, in 2025 the United States informally attempted to gather information about Greenland’s infrastructure, including key military infrastructure. Notably, the outlet says this took place without Copenhagen’s official involvement and by bypassing standard diplomatic-military channels.

The outlet reports that US officials tried to encourage their Danish counterparts on the island to disclose information about military facilities, ports, and air bases. Berlingske notes it reached this conclusion based on documents obtained from Denmark’s Ministry of Defence that were heavily redacted (sharply shortened) for national security reasons.

Key point: in the newspaper’s interpretation, such data could help the US plan potential military scenarios involving Greenland — including options for “intervention” on the island or the use of force. In other words, Berlingske frames it as “scoping out the ground in advance.”

This is also a notable signal for the months ahead: as competition around the Arctic intensifies (logistics, ports, airfields, bases — all strategic assets), even a “routine information request” can turn into a geopolitical uproar. European officials openly warn that tensions around Greenland could seriously damage NATO relations.

The conclusion is simple: Greenland is no longer just an “icy island on the map” — it’s a major knot for major players. Today it’s a tug-of-war over information; tomorrow it raises big questions about diplomacy, security, and alliances.
