Israel’s president refuses to pardon Netanyahu: Trump is furious

Tensions are reaching a peak on Israel’s political stage: the legal dispute between the country’s president and prime minister has prompted international-level discussion. Isaac Herzog did not grant Benjamin Netanyahu’s request for a pardon as the latter faces corruption allegations. Zamin.uz presents the details of this sensational decision and the White House’s reaction.

Herzog’s search for a “middle ground”

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog took an unexpected position on the prime minister’s pardon request. According to the presidential administration, Herzog believes there are more acceptable solutions than simply saying “yes” or “no.” The president is mediating between the prime minister and the attorney general, urging the sides to reach a mutual agreement (a plea deal).

“President Herzog believes that the sides reaching a compromise is the most correct decision and one that corresponds to the interests of the state,” a spokesman for the president’s office said.

Sharp criticism from Donald Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump sharply condemned the Israeli president’s decision. Trump called Herzog “weak and pathetic” and is demanding that Benjamin Netanyahu be pardoned immediately.

In the American leader’s view, Netanyahu, known by the nickname “Bibi,” should focus all his attention not on court proceedings but on the ongoing war efforts. According to Trump, the legal problems distracting the prime minister could negatively affect the country’s security.

Corruption case: Cigars, champagne and media games

Investigations into Netanyahu began in 2016, and formal charges were filed against him in 2019. The prime minister is suspected of the following:

  • Accepting expensive cigars and champagne worth tens of thousands of dollars from billionaires and Hollywood producers in exchange for personal favors;

  • Granting privileges and providing services to major media moguls in order to secure positive coverage about himself and his family.

The prime minister himself has firmly denied all the allegations, calling them a political order. For this reason, he appealed to the president for a pardon last November.

Dear readers, in your opinion, is it right for the leader of a country to stand trial while war is ongoing? Or should a pardon be granted for the sake of state security?
