China unveiled the BYD Datang hybrid

China’s industry ministry has revealed the hybrid version of the BYD Datang, the brand’s large flagship crossover. The new model will carry the DM-P badge and is expected to join the domestic market soon, adding a plug-in hybrid option alongside the previously shown electric version. Reports Xn----7sbbeeptbfadjdvm5ab9bqj.xn--p1ai.

The Datang keeps the bold Dynasty family design language, but BYD has given it a more distinct look than many of its stablemates. According to the filing, the hybrid model differs from the electric version mainly through its unique wheel design. It also uses flush door handles that can still be operated if the vehicle loses power, in line with newer local safety requirements.

The crossover is substantial in size, measuring 5,263 to 5,302 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,800 to 1,810 mm tall, with a 3,130 mm wheelbase. Curb weight ranges from 2,790 to 2,875 kg. Interior images and a detailed equipment list have not yet been published, though the model is likely to offer advanced driver assistance and other smart features typical of modern Chinese vehicles.

Power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 156 hp, supported by two electric motors. One of the electric units is rated at 272 hp, while total system output, battery capacity and electric range have not been disclosed. Top speed is listed at 200 km/h. The launch comes at a difficult time for China’s auto market, especially for new energy vehicles, but BYD may be betting that a high-end model like the Datang can help offset weaker demand in lower-margin segments.
