According to a recent statement by DC Studios co-head James Gunn, work is currently underway on the script for a new film about the famous “Wonder Woman.” In his exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, he emphasized that casting for the film has not yet begun, so who will play the lead role remains a mystery.
Among the rebooted projects of the DC cinematic universe, the first film to hit the screens will be “Superman,” which is scheduled to premiere in US theaters on July 11 of this year. Two years later, on June 26, 2026, the film “Supergirl” will be presented to a wide audience. In this film, the main character will be played by the young actress Milly Alcock, known for her role in the series “House of the Dragon.”
The casting for the new Superman and his assistant Lois Lane was announced in June 2023. These roles went to David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, respectively. Corenswet previously appeared in the series “Hollywood,” “The Politician,” and the film “Pearl.” Brosnahan won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her brilliant performance in the series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and also actively starred in the films “Spy Games” and “When the Storm Begins.”
It is worth noting that Corenswet becomes the fourth actor to play Superman. In the first “Superman” film of 1978, the legendary Christopher Reeve portrayed this character and continued in the next three parts. In the 2006 film “Superman Returns,” directed by Bryan Singer, Brandon Routh took on the role, but the film did not meet commercial expectations.
In 2013, British actor Henry Cavill, after a successful performance in “Man of Steel,” played Superman in “Batman v Superman” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017). He expressed his readiness to return to the role, but the current DC heads — James Gunn and Peter Safran — preferred to give the opportunity to a younger actor.
Against the backdrop of such major changes, it is also interesting that the “Wonder Woman” film is being reconsidered. In previous DC films, this character was successfully portrayed by Gal Gadot. She first appeared in the 2016 film “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and then, under the direction of Patty Jenkins, two separate “Wonder Woman” films were made in 2017 and 2020.
Nevertheless, after DC Studios came under the leadership of Gunn and Safran, Jenkins’ third film project was halted. This, in turn, put Gal Gadot’s future in the franchise in question. However, in an interview in August 2023, the actress expressed confidence that she would again appear in this role.
Currently, fans are waiting to see who will be chosen for the film, what direction the story will take, and how likely Gal Gadot’s return is. The updates and new actors in the DC cinematic universe show that the studio’s strategic plans are becoming even more interesting and complex. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
