Located on a hill in Los Angeles, the Hollywood sign has remained one of the most famous symbols of the United States for over 100 years. However, by the 1970s, this iconic sign was on the verge of collapse.
In 1923, the “HOLLYWOODLAND” sign was erected for advertising purposes and was planned to last only 18 months. However, over time, the sign became a symbol of the film industry. In 1978, several letters collapsed due to a severe storm.
Rock star Alice Cooper launched the “Save the Sign” campaign. He donated $27,000 for the last letter “O” in memory of his friend Groucho Marx. His initiative inspired other celebrities to sponsor letters — including Hugh Hefner, Gene Autry, and Warner Bros.
Through the fundraising campaign, a new steel sign worth $250,000 was constructed. Today, the Hollywood sign remains not only a symbol of the city but also a symbol of the film world that has become a global dream.
