Tivai Island is small, but it is home to endangered chimpanzees, monkeys and various primates. In 2025, the island was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Reaching the island is difficult: travelers must take a long road from Freetown to the Moa River, then cross by boat to Tivai and the Gola rainforest. Visitors can stay overnight in simple camps, with huts and a small kitchen.
Red monkeys, Diana monkeys and northern chimpanzees live on the island. Research suggests there may be three groups of chimpanzees.
Visitors can explore the island’s nature through lit trails, night walks and boat trips.
