In 2023, a volcanic eruption near the Icelandic town of Grindavík forced the evacuation of 3,700 people. Overnight, the town became empty and is now known as a “ghost town”, open to tourists.
During the eruption, houses and roads were damaged, and the ground cracked. Some residents have returned despite the danger, but most still live elsewhere.
A photo exhibition has been organized in the town to show the events of that time. It features images of rescuers, ruins, and people who lost their homes.
Today, only a small number of people live in Grindavík. Experts warn that further volcanic eruptions may occur in the area.
