Scientists have announced that Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, based on mRNA technology, can not only protect against the coronavirus but also have a positive effect on the treatment of certain types of cancer. That is, it was found that these drugs, widely used during the pandemic, have the potential to increase the effectiveness of immunotherapy.
Within the framework of the study, the data of more than a thousand patients diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and melanoma were compared. They received modern immunotherapy - "checkpoint inhibitors." Interestingly, about 100 days before immunotherapy, patients who received the mRNA vaccine lived twice as long as those who didn't.
Experts assess this result as a great scientific indisputable support. However, a number of questions remain open: which phase would be most effective to add the vaccine, how its effect manifests against other forms of cancer, and whether new vaccines that further activate the immune system can be developed - all of these require further research.
Nevertheless, scientists note that this direction may open a new chapter in cancer therapy in the future.
