Leprosy detected in Romania after 40 years

In Romania, leprosy was recorded again after a break of more than forty years. It has been officially confirmed that this disease has been detected in two individuals in the country.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Health, Reuters and European Pravda reported that two massage therapists, aged 21 and 25, working at a resort located in the northwestern city of Cluj, were diagnosed with leprosy. Currently, they are under medical supervision. At the same time, two more individuals are being examined to exclude the possibility of infection.

Minister of Health A. Rogobete commented on the situation and called on the population to remain calm. He emphasized that leprosy is not easily contagious and requires long-term and close contact. The minister also reported that one of the patients had recently returned from Asian countries, where she spent a month with her mother, who had been hospitalized.

Until all circumstances of the incident are clarified, the resort's activities have been temporarily suspended. It is noted that the last officially confirmed case of leprosy in Romania was observed 44 years ago.
