The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has penalized three Real Madrid players for violating disciplinary rules following their match against Atlético Madrid.
Vinícius Escapes Punishment
At the end of March, UEFA announced that it was reviewing incidents involving Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Dani Ceballos, and Vinícius Júnior during their match against Atlético (2:1, 0:1, penalties 4:2). However, in its final decision, the disciplinary committee ruled not to open a case against Vinícius.
The Brazilian forward, after being substituted, made a gesture toward Atlético fans, signaling that Real Madrid has 15 Champions League titles, while their rivals have none. Despite criticism from fans and pundits, UEFA found no grounds for punishing Vinícius.
Fines for Rüdiger, Mbappé, and Ceballos
However, three of his teammates – Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, and Dani Ceballos – were fined. According to UEFA’s decision, Rüdiger must pay €40,000, Mbappé €30,000, and Ceballos €20,000. Additionally, Rüdiger and Mbappé are on probation – if they commit another disciplinary offense, they will face suspension.
Rüdiger’s Gesture and a Possible Suspension Against Arsenal
Antonio Rüdiger’s post-match actions, in particular, have sparked heated debates. His emotional gesture has been widely discussed, with reports suggesting that he could miss the first leg against Arsenal in the Champions League due to a potential ban.
This incident once again highlights not only the passion with which Real Madrid players compete but also their recurring disciplinary issues.
