Guardiola speaks on Khusanov, Echeverri, and City’s struggles

Yesterday, in the FA Cup final, Manchester City unexpectedly lost 0–1 to Crystal Palace and ended the season trophyless. After the match, head coach Pep Guardiola shared his thoughts on the team’s performance, Claudio Echeverri’s substitution, and other bench players like Abdukodir Khusanov.

On Echeverri’s substitution: “I felt it”

Guardiola commented on bringing Echeverri onto the pitch:

“Honestly, it wasn’t a bad decision. He had three good chances. I’ve seen him in training and felt he could impact the match. This is the FA Cup, and he should be playing in other competitions too.”

On Khusanov and Reisch: “I don’t like it”

Speaking about young players stuck on the bench:

“Khusanov and Reisch are always on the bench, play 4–5 games without getting on the pitch — I don’t like it.”

For reference, Husanov last played against Bournemouth in the FA Cup. Since then, he hasn’t featured in any matches.

Who was supposed to take the penalty?

Reporters asked Pep who chose the penalty taker:

“I don’t know. They decided it on the field. I didn’t talk to them about it.”

In the final, Erling Haaland handed the spot-kick to Omar Marmoush, who missed after the Palace keeper saved it.

On problems and solutions: “Stability has returned”

Regarding the team’s current form:

“In the past month, we solved issues in defense and finishing. We used to concede many goals, but in the last nine games — only five. So we’ve become more stable.”

Comparison with Southampton: “More chances this time”

“We were more active than against Southampton. We created many chances, but couldn’t score, and that’s why we didn’t win,” Guardiola concluded.

Preparation for the next game

“We have two important matches left. They’ll be decisive for the season’s end and our future. We’ll rest today and start preparing for Bournemouth tomorrow.”

Current position: City in 6th

City currently sits 6th in the Premier League with 65 points after 36 matches. A win in the next round could lift them to 3rd place.
