On the verge of the new Serie A season, many Italian clubs are rebuilding their squads. Roma is no exception. The arrival of Gian Piero Gasperini as head coach prompted major changes. A fifth-place finish for the Romans was not enough, so the club launched an active transfer policy.
A focal point has become Uzbek forward Eldor Shomurodov. He joined Roma in 2021 and spent several seasons out on loan. But his future for the next season is once again under scrutiny.
Last season, Shomurodov played under Claudio Ranieri and showcased strong performances—goal-scoring, tenacity, and fighting spirit. These qualities attracted attention from new clubs.
First, Turkish side Istanbul Başakşehir made an official offer around €8 million. But after that, interest from bigger leagues emerged.
France’s Rennes began talks. They want to include Eldor in their first team. Ligue 1 ranks among Europe’s top five, and this could be an important move.
Meanwhile, Shomurodov himself prefers to stay in Italy, in which case Cremonese—newcomers to Serie A—are among the frontrunners. Despite claims from sporting director Simone Zaccetta that there is no interest, insiders see it as a distraction tactic, and talks with Roma are.
Additionally, Genoa is watching closely, since their agreement with Roma entitles them to 10% of Shomurodov’s next transfer fee.
Roma is waiting for official offers and is expected to allow sales to strengthen finances. For Rennes to afford him, they might need to sell a player; Başakşehir is looking at alternative targets.
So Shomurodov’s destination remains uncertain. But whichever club signs him, the transfer will significantly impact the player himself, Roma, Genoa, and the buying club. His stint in Rome seems to be ending—Italy, France, or Turkey may be next. We’ll find out soon. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
