In the Piedmont region of northern Italy, the body of doctor Nicola Ivaldo, who had been missing without a trace for almost a year, was discovered with the help of artificial intelligence and drone technologies, writes ndtv.com.
According to information, the Italian National Alpine and Cave Rescue Service (CNSAS) had been searching for the 64-year-old doctor for a long time. Throughout the year, traditional search methods yielded no results.
After that, new-generation drones were involved in the search operations. On July 29 of this year, two drones monitored the mountainous areas of Piedmont, which are completely covered by forests, for 5 hours. The images they collected were uploaded into an artificial intelligence system, and within a short time, "suspicious areas" were identified.
Drone operator Saverio Isola played an important role in this process. According to him, the artificial intelligence identified rare-colored pixels in the images, barely visible to the human eye, and was able to recognize the doctor’s helmet. This item appeared so small in the mountain landscape that it could not be seen with the naked eye.
From that exact point, the search efforts intensified. Although the operation was delayed for several days due to low temperature, rain, and fog, on July 31, the doctor’s body was found with the help of specialists and drones.
Rescuers are evaluating this work as a great success. According to them, if these images had been analyzed without artificial intelligence, the result could have been delayed for months. Saverio Isola commented on this as follows:
“This is undoubtedly the result of human effort. However, without the help of modern technology, achieving such success would have been nearly impossible. This was a true team victory.”
This incident once again confirmed how practical and important artificial intelligence can be in human life. At the same time, it showed how the effective cooperation between drone technology and human intelligence can powerfully influence life-saving and problem-solving efforts.
