Robotics in China: innovations in elderly care and healthcare

The Chinese government is applying robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) at the level of a national strategy to solve the social and economic problems arising from the growth of the elderly population.

1. Robotic Assistants in Medicine

Robots are widely used not only in nursing homes but also in hospitals.

  • Surgical Robots: While foreign models (e.g., Da Vinci) initially dominated, now China’s local manufacturers (e.g., MicroPort MedBot or TINAVI Medical) are developing high-precision robot-surgeons designed to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures.

  • Rehabilitation Robots: These robots help patients restore motor functions (mobility) after strokes or injuries. They ensure the repeatability and intensive monitoring of exercises, which reduces the burden on doctors and nurses.

2. Robots for Elderly Care

Special companion robots are being introduced to compensate for the shortage of nurses and assistants in nursing homes.

  • Companionship and Emotional Support: For example, small anthropomorphic robots like iPal can converse with the elderly, remind them of medication times, and help establish video communication with family members.

  • Daily Helpers: These robots perform heavy physical tasks such as delivering food, house cleaning, or transferring the elderly from the bed to a chair, which reduces the physical strain on human assistants.

3. Intellectual Monitoring and Diagnostics

AI systems not only provide practical assistance but are also used for continuous monitoring of the health of the elderly.

  • Anomaly Detection: Sensors and cameras with AI programs analyze the gait, sleep patterns, and daily movements of the elderly. If a sudden fall or abnormal movement is detected, the system immediately alerts medical personnel.

  • Health Assessment: AI helps detect early signs of diseases such as dementia (memory deterioration) through voice analysis, which allows for early intervention.

Future-Oriented Policy

Such investments by China in robotics and AI are directly linked to the government's strategic plan, "Made in China 2025," where robotics is designated as one of the main priority areas. The goal is to achieve ** global leadership** in this field and effectively solve the problems associated with the aging of society.
