Autonomous vehicles from Uber partner Avride under investigation

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Avride, a robotaxi manufacturer that partners with Uber. This follows 16 traffic accidents involving the company's vehicles, which resulted in one minor injury. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reporting .

According to the investigation, the accidents are linked to several flaws in the Avride system. Specifically, the vehicles struggled with changing lanes, reacting to other vehicles in the same lane, and detecting stationary objects on the road. Interestingly, a safety monitor was in the driver's seat during all incidents, though it remains unclear why they did not intervene.

Avride stated that it reported all incidents to the NHTSA in a timely manner. According to company representatives, each incident occurring between December 2025 and March 2026 was analyzed, and technical and operational improvements were made to the system. The company also noted that the number of accidents relative to the distance traveled is decreasing.

These incidents in Dallas and Austin raise serious questions about the safety of autonomous technologies. Currently, Waymo is also under similar scrutiny. Uber has not yet provided an official comment on the situation.
