Scientists detect traces of dark matter in black hole mergers

Dark matter remains one of the greatest mysteries of modern science. Astronomers estimate that it makes up the bulk of the Universe's mass, but because it does not interact with electromagnetic radiation, it is impossible to observe directly. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have attempted to detect this mysterious substance through gravitational waves generated during black hole mergers. Physicists hypothesized that if black holes merge within a cloud of dark matter, this environment should alter the pattern of gravitational waves. They analyzed 28 gravitational signals obtained via LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) detectors and identified deviations from the standard vacuum model in the GW190728 and GW190814 events. Specifically, the GW190728 signal may be the clearest evidence theoretically confirming the influence of dark matter.

Researchers are not yet rushing to call these results a definitive discovery of dark matter. However, this method could usher in a new era in uncovering the secrets of fundamental physics by using black holes as natural gravitational interferometers. Future observations will allow for a more precise study of the nature of these anomalies.
