European aviation giant Airbus has launched a new distributed supercomputer infrastructure located in France and Germany. Implemented as part of a five-year, €100 million contract with provider Bull, this project has tripled the company's computing power. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
The system is based on the BullSequana XH3000 modular architecture, incorporating CPUs and GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA. The data storage system is built on IBM Spectrum Scale technology, while high-speed interconnects are provided by the NVIDIA InfiniBand NDR architecture, with each port offering 400 Gbit/s bandwidth.
Although the hardware is physically located in Toulouse and Hamburg, it operates as a single virtual cluster under a unified task scheduler. Airbus uses these resources to create "digital twins" of civil aircraft and helicopters, perform complex aerodynamic calculations, and conduct acoustic tests of fuselages.
The project is also notable for its high energy efficiency. Using a specialized liquid cooling system, excess heat from the servers is redirected to heat Airbus administrative buildings, ensuring the environmental sustainability of the technological process.
