Mirziyoyev Puts Forward Important Initiatives at Global Urbanization Forum

President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev delivered a speech at the Leaders' Summit held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum. In his address, the head of state outlined global proposals that fundamentally transform the system of modern urban planning, providing the population with comfortable housing, and building sustainable eco-cities.

Summit in Baku and development in Karabakh

Our President highly praised the organization of the forum and expressed gratitude to the brotherly people of Azerbaijan and personally to President Ilham Aliyev for their sincere hospitality. He also commended the large-scale reconstruction and construction work being carried out on the lands of Karabakh after the war.

Global crisis and housing shortage

Shavkat Mirziyoyev proved with statistics that urbanization processes have become one of the most serious challenges facing humanity today:

"Today, nearly 3 billion people on Earth live without even the most basic living conditions. What is surprising is that more than 1 billion people live in informal settlements without any documents, and more than 300 million are completely homeless," our leader said.

Climate crisis, economic difficulties, and armed conflicts are intensifying migration globally, placing a heavy burden on major cities.

Uzbekistan's strategic goals

For our country, urbanization policy is of vital importance. According to analyses, in the next 15 years, the population of Uzbekistan will reach 50 million people , and the urbanization rate will be 65 percent .

Taking into account this significant demographic growth, huge steps are being taken in the housing sector in our country:

  • 2025 summary: In one year alone, in the country 238 thousand apartments were built and commissioned;

  • Financial support: To support affordable and low-cost housing programs, the state allocates nearly 2 billion dollars annually;

  • Legalization: About 100 thousand residential properties in cities were legalized based on property rights;

  • Renovation plan: It is planned to bring the share of housing rebuilt based on modern standards in place of dilapidated houses to 60 percent .

"New Tashkent" — a mega-project of the future

In his speech, the President touched upon the "New Tashkent" project rising next to our capital. Designed for 2 million people, this place is being built on an entirely new basis — "green", "smart", "safe" and based on the "15-minute city" principle, where every convenience is within a 15-minute walk.

Three important proposals to the world community

The leader of Uzbekistan put forward the following initiatives on an international scale to solve global problems together:

  1. Establish an "Alliance of Smart and Safe Cities" for experience exchange among world cities;

  2. Establish the international "Green City" awardto encourage eco-friendly urban planning;

  3. Hold the next major event, namely the 15th session of the World Urban Forum in 2030 in the city of New Tashkent .

At the end of his speech, the head of state expressed confidence that this forum would serve as a solid foundation for new friendships and promising partnerships in global urban planning.

In your opinion, can the "15-minute city" principle applied in New Tashkent completely solve the traffic congestion problem in our capital?
