Syrian security forces have captured Brigadier General Atif Najib, a maternal relative of former President Bashar al-Assad. This was announced by Mustafa Kanifati, head of the General Security Directorate of Latakia province.

"During an operation by the General Security Directorate in Latakia province with the assistance of the military, Brigadier General Atif Najib, who served as head of the political security department in Deraa, was captured," Kanifati said.

According to the military, Najib committed "crimes against the Syrian people," in connection with which he has already been handed over to the relevant authorities and is expected to be held accountable.

Ahmed al-Sharaa (Abu Muhammad al-Julani), the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, was declared the interim president of Syria. Al-Sharaa will be responsible for forming an interim legislative council that will operate until the country's new constitution is adopted. The new Syrian government has dissolved the army and security services. In their place, a new structure will emerge to ensure the security of citizens. It was also announced that the Arab Socialist Awakening Party (BAAS), which came to power in Syria in 1963, had been dissolved. Its secretary general since 2000 was former President Bashar al-Assad.

The fall of the Assad regime

In late November, armed rebels, mainly HTS fighters, began advancing into northern Syria. They took control of Idlib province, the country's second most populous city of Aleppo, and parts of the provinces of Hama and Homs. They then entered Damascus. President Bashar al-Assad fled the country with his family.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Bashar al-Assad reached an agreement with the rebels and agreed to resign, after which he left Syria. The rebels promised $ 10 million for information leading to the capture of Assad.

After the politician left the country, the rebels stormed Assad's residence, looting and looting things. About 50 luxury and expensive cars, including BMWs, Audis, Ferraris, and Lamborghini Diablos, were found in the garage at the residence.

Later, Kremlin sources reported that the president, who fled Syria, arrived in Moscow with his family, and that Putin had given them shelter. On December 10, Muhammad al-Bashir, who led the rebels in the city of Idlib, declared himself the head of the transitional government of Syria. In a televised address to the nation, he said he would hold the position until at least March 1, 2025. Now, al-Julani has been declared the president of Syria.
