NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called on Germany to significantly increase its defense spending and increase weapons production. He said the alliance should prepare for a possible war. This was reported by Deutsche Welle.

The alliance secretary general highlighted Germany's efforts to provide military assistance to Ukraine. No other European NATO member state supports Kiev as much as Berlin, he said.

"Given the size of the German economy, of course we want them to do more. I am convinced that Germany will have to increase production with its arms companies and innovative potential. Germany needs to increase military spending, that is inevitable," Rutte said.

“Threat” from Russia and China

The NATO secretary general said that increasing defense spending would become a topic of discussion in many European countries in the coming months. He explained his call by the threat from Russia.

“I tell you frankly: we must prepare for war. This is the best way to avoid war,” he explained.

Rutte noted that a dangerous situation is also emerging with China, as Beijing is increasing its military capabilities.

Trump calls for increasing defense spending to 5 percent of GDP

In early January, US President-elect Donald Trump said that NATO countries should increase annual defense spending to 5 percent of gross domestic product. He threatened to end Washington’s participation in the alliance’s collective defense system.

The head of diplomacy of the European Union, Kaya Callas, and the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, who presides over the Council of the European Union, supported this call. During his first presidency, Trump demanded that European countries increase their defense spending to 2% of GDP.

Germany has met the two percent target, but seven EU countries have yet to meet the target.
