US President Donald Trump's statements about the need to hold presidential elections in Ukraine indicate that he wants to get rid of Volodymyr Zelensky, writes the British magazine The Economist, citing sources.

"Trump, apparently, wants to get rid of Zelensky, whom he has never liked and considers a difficult person. It is not about the elections, but about getting rid of Zelensky," the publication's interlocutor emphasizes.

According to the publication, theoretically, Ukraine could reject Trump's offer of peace talks with Russia and continue hostilities, but in practice such a development of events would quickly lead to a deterioration in the situation in Kiev.

"The Ukrainian army has serious operational problems and almost no strategic planning, front-line units are severely understaffed, and some brigades have been reduced to less than a third of their usual strength," the report says.

According to the magazine, Trump has many levers to influence Ukraine - he could unilaterally lift sanctions on Russia and possibly reduce or completely stop military aid to Kiev. In addition, Trump could cut off the flow of intelligence from the United States and turn off the Starlink satellite terminals, which are the basis for communication between Ukrainian army units.

Earlier, Trump said that if Kiev wants to have a place at the negotiating table on an agreement, Ukraine should hold presidential elections.

Trump calls Zelensky an “unelected dictator”

Unelected dictator. Zelensky needs to act quickly, otherwise his country will be completely destroyed. We are successfully negotiating with Russia to end the war. Everyone has recognized that only Trump and his administration can do this, the US leader said.

He added that “he loves Ukraine, but because Zelensky did a very bad job, his country was destroyed and millions of people died for no reason.”

Trump claimed that Zelensky was able to persuade the US to allocate $350 billion “for a war that should never have been started and could never be won.” The Ukrainian president said that reports that Washington had allegedly provided Kiev with $500 billion in aid were untrue.

Zelensky called reports that his approval rating had fallen by 4 percent disinformation and said that he could not be removed from office now.

Presidential elections in Ukraine were due to be held in March 2024. Zelensky's term officially ended on May 20 of that year. At the same time, he himself said that the issue of legitimacy did not concern him.
