The head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Elon Musk has announced that all government employees will be required to provide detailed information about their work over the past week.
“In accordance with the instructions of US President Donald Trump, all federal employees will soon receive emails asking them to explain what they did over the past week. Failure to respond will be considered resignation,” Musk wrote on his page on the X social network.
The letters sent to officials are required to indicate “five points about what they achieved over the past week,” while employees writing responses must not provide classified information. Responses must be sent by 11:59 p.m. US time on February 24. There is no word on the letters that failure to respond will be considered resignation.
The Office of Personnel Management, an independent agency of the US government, requested a summary of the work done. According to the head of the office, McLaurin Pinover, the letters were sent as part of “the Trump administration’s efforts to ensure efficiency and accountability of federal employees.”
All agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency and the White House, received such letters. The emails were also sent to American diplomats in various countries.
Some agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice, asked their employees to delay responding to the letters.
Elon Musk said that “a lot of good responses” were received from federal agencies. He called for the first responders to be promoted.
The American Federation of Government Employees, a union representing thousands of federal employees, said it would “complain about any kind of illegal dismissal of its members and federal employees across the country.”
Elon Musk demanded that officials be held accountable for their actions after US President Donald Trump on February 22 called on the head of DOGE to “get tough” on the matter.
