A record number of British citizens applied for Irish citizenship in 2024, the Financial Times reported, citing government data.
According to the results of 2024, 23,456 applications were submitted to the Foreign Births Register - a 15% increase compared to the previous year. It is noted that this figure even exceeds the record set in 2019, when Britain was on the verge of leaving the EU.
Immigration lawyers say this is due to the poor state of the UK economy, political instability, the "severe" impact of Brexit on tourism, as well as restrictions on work and contracts in the European Union.
"The uncertain political situation in Britain has not only become one of the reasons, but also prompted more and more people to accelerate the search for a "Plan B". In our opinion, the number of such applications will only increase, as the British economy is increasingly losing its attractiveness for the younger generation, and those on the verge of retirement are increasingly aware of the possibility of tax increases," said a representative of the law firm RNL Solicitors.
