An asteroid may hit the moon in 2032 - is the earth safe?
Interesting information has been published about the asteroid 2024YR4, discovered by astronomers in December 2024. According to preliminary predictions, this cosmic body may collide with the Moon on December 22, 2032.

NASA experts estimate the probability of the asteroid hitting the Moon at 1.7 percent. However, the probability of the asteroid posing a threat to Earth is almost non-existent.

Is there a threat to Earth? New NASA calculations

In January 2024, it was reported that the probability of the asteroid 2024YR4 colliding with Earth was more than 1 percent. On February 19, it was reported that this figure had reached 3.1 percent.

However, as a result of NASA's latest calculations, this figure has changed dramatically. Now it has become known that the probability of the asteroid hitting Earth is 0.004 percent. In other words, the probability is almost zero.

NASA continues to monitor the asteroid

Astronomers are developing a plan to study the exact parameters of the asteroid using the James Webb Telescope. According to current data, the asteroid is about 40-90 meters in diameter, which is 3-4 times larger than the Chelyabinsk meteorite that fell in the Urals in 2013.

Asteroid 2024YR4 was discovered on December 27, 2024 by the ATLAS Observatory in Chile. At the end of January, astronomer Stas Korotky estimated the probability of this asteroid colliding with Earth at 0.5% to 6%. However, NASA's latest calculations have refuted these assumptions.

There is a possibility of a collision with the Moon, but there is no danger to Earth

- In 2032, the asteroid 2024YR4 may hit the Moon, but the probability of this is very low - 1.7 percent.
- The probability of the asteroid posing a threat to Earth is almost zero - 0.004 percent.
- NASA continues to study the direction and composition of the asteroid.

So, for now, there is no need for Earthlings to worry, but scientists continue to monitor this cosmic object.
