Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Kiev on February 24, the third anniversary of the outbreak of the war. The politician, who met with Zelensky and said that he still supports Ukraine, gave a short interview to Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Gordon during his visit. In the 11-minute conversation, Johnson explained why US President Trump is pursuing such a policy towards Ukraine.
The conversation took place before the debate between Trump and Zelensky at the White House. If you have the opportunity, I recommend that you watch this interview, translated into Russian, because Johnson reacted to the events not as an expert or an ordinary person, but as a politician who led the entire British government.
“As someone who loves Ukraine, who firmly supports it and believes that it will win the war, it is difficult to hear lies being told about this country from Washington. It is disgusting and a big mistake that the Kremlin's own words are being spoken by people in the White House who should understand these issues better than anyone else.
Saying that Ukraine started the war, comparing Zelensky to Putin as a dictator, is absurd. Yes, all of this is clearly false," Johnson said at the beginning of his speech, explaining that he did not support Trump's statements.
By the way, after Johnson's interview, Trump even managed to deny that he called Zelensky a dictator. However, it is true that Mr. Trump called the Ukrainian president an unelected dictator, and the proof of this is on the Kun.uz YouTube channel.
According to Johnson, Trump himself knows that much of what he says is untrue, and he chose this method of pressure only to get Zelensky to sign the agreement: "I have enough reasons to respect Trump, he wants peace. There are three sides that the American president needs to negotiate on this issue: Ukraine, Europe and Russia. Trump wants to mobilize all three sides. For example, Europe says it needs to do more to protect Ukraine, because Ukraine is actually in Europe. Britain also needs to increase military spending to 3 percent of GDP by 2030. That's why Trump is putting pressure on the Europeans,” Johnson said.
According to the former British prime minister, there are a lot of people among the Republicans who whisper unflattering things into Trump's ears. Johnson did not hide his dislike for Trump's friend Tucker Carlson, who interviewed Putin during the war, and gave this journalist as an example of those who are deceiving Trump.
“People like Tucker Carlson have a very large sphere of influence. They fill Trump's head with unflattering things about the war. Trump wants to convince such skeptics that the United States will get something from Ukraine in return for its help in the war.
For example, in 1941, US President Franklin Roosevelt received a lot of money from the British, military bases in the Caribbean and other things. In return, he supported Britain in the war through Lend-Lease. You know, Britain paid off the US under that Lend-Lease until 2006. That's why Trump wants to show that he's getting something from Ukraine. That's how the mineral resources deal came about," the politician says.
According to Johnson, the deal has very strict clauses, but Ukraine is forced to sign it for its own future. Because the deal forces the US to support Ukraine.
"I think Ukraine should sign the deal. Yes, I don't support the clauses in the deal as a pro-Ukraine person. But this deal forces the US to support a free, sovereign and secure Ukraine. Yes, the US will get a 50 percent share of this investment fund. But until Ukraine is secure, not a penny will go to the fund. I think it's better to sign this deal than to leave Ukraine under Moscow's control. After all, the deal will force the US to support Ukraine even under Trump. And this is a big achievement," Johnson said.
The politician believes that the White House does not understand what Putin wants: "Trump thinks that the issue can be resolved through territorial division, but that's not the point, Putin wants complete control of Ukraine," Johnson said.
Dmitry Gordon asked Johnson what he would do if he were in Trump's shoes tomorrow. Johnson gave an interesting answer, and this time he mentioned Tucker Carlson.
"First of all, I would tell the Republicans in Congress to stop being stupid, and then I would tell Tucker Carlson to go and throw his head in the nearest lake. I would increase military aid to Ukraine and tell Putin, Vladimir, you lost, you wanted to enslave Ukraine, and if I were here, this would not happen.
To attract the American public to help Ukraine, I would probably sign a mineral resources agreement and start the process of Ukraine's admission to NATO. "We would accelerate the integration process by including only the lands controlled by Kiev, just like we did with Germany in the 1950s," Johnson says.
