Canada will impose a 25 percent tariff on $155 billion in American goods in response to the trade war launched by Donald Trump. This was announced by the country's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Initially, the tariffs will apply to $30 billion in goods, and after 21 days to the remaining $125 billion in goods. In addition, Canada will file a complaint against the United States with the World Trade Organization.
"The United States has launched a trade war against Canada - a close partner, ally, and friend. At the same time, they are appeasing Vladimir Putin - a liar, a murderous dictator, and talking about positive cooperation with Russia," Trudeau said.
Justin Trudeau added that Canadians are “smart and kind,” but that they “will not back down from a fight” when the well-being of the country and its citizens is at stake.
“Donald! Over the course of more than eight years of our partnership, we have accomplished many great things… I don’t usually agree with The Wall Street Journal, but Donald, even though they call you a very smart guy, this is stupid,” the Canadian prime minister said, addressing Trump.
After Trudeau’s statement, Donald Trump left the following comment on the TruthSocial social network: “Please explain to the Canadian governor Trudeau that with the introduction of retaliatory tariffs on the United States, our retaliatory tariffs will increase by this amount.”
The United States has been imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods since March 4. A 10 percent tariff has also been imposed on products imported from China. Trump said his decision was to “force Mexico, Canada and China to fulfill their promises to stop illegal immigration and the flow of toxic fentanyl and other drugs into the United States.”
After the US tariffs went into effect, China announced that it would retaliate. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum promised to retaliate against the US and said she would give a detailed statement on the measures on March 9.
