Disagreements over import tariffs have once again escalated in the U.S. Earlier, it was reported that Tesla founder Elon Musk may be dissatisfied with the Biden administration's tariff policy. Now, the conflict has intensified — Musk has openly criticized Trump’s advisor Peter Navarro, who supports the idea of tariffs.
Is Tesla not “American enough”?
In an interview with CNBC, Peter Navarro stated that Tesla is not sufficiently an American company. According to him, Tesla cars are mostly assembled from foreign parts:
“For example, the batteries come from Japan and China, electronics come from Taiwan. What we want is a car whose tires are from Akron, transmission from Indianapolis, and engines from Flint or Saginaw. And most importantly — it should be produced in the USA,” said Navarro.
He added that Musk is opposing tariffs only to protect the interests of his own company.
Musk didn’t hold back
Elon Musk responded to Navarro’s comments via his social media platform X, harshly criticizing him:
“Navarro is a complete fool. What he says is false. Tesla makes American cars. He’s dumber than a bag of bricks,” Musk wrote.
What’s really behind this conflict?
According to Bild, the dispute between Musk and Navarro clearly reflects a deeper conflict between industrial interests and protectionist trade policy. Tech giants like Tesla are worried that new tariffs may threaten their global expansion.
