Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a long-forgotten ancient Greek amphitheater on the island of Lefkada in Greece. According to the Ministry of Culture of Greece, excavations that began in 2015 on Kulmos Hill confirmed the presence of a theater with seating rows, an orchestra area, and stage walls.
A discovery steeped in history
Excavations revealed 21 rows of seating — the cavea. It is believed they were divided by a horizontal passage — a diazoma — with three additional rows above. The distance between the cavea’s side walls ranges from 20 to 28 meters. Although the construction was never completed, researchers estimate it could have accommodated around 3,500 spectators. Had it been finished, its capacity might have reached 10–11 thousand.
Orchestra and stage structure
Of particular interest is a 16.65-meter-wide circular orchestra, carved into rock and bordered with stone, which served as a performance area for choirs and actors. Parts of the stage were also found, including sandstone columns and fragments of an Ionic portico that once formed the loggia (outer gallery) supported by 16 columns.

Decorated stone seats
Among the most striking discoveries were three carved stone seats featuring motifs of dolphins, birds, and lion paws. These were likely intended for honored guests such as priests or city officials.
Abandoned after the founding of Nicopolis
Research suggests the theater was eventually abandoned after the Roman emperor Augustus founded the city of Nicopolis in 31 BCE and relocated Lefkada’s population there. As the ancient polis declined, buildings including the theater were partially dismantled and reused as construction material.
Preservation and restoration
Despite damage from agriculture and time, the lower part of the theater is well-preserved. A restoration study has already been completed, co-financing has been proposed, and the site is awaiting approval to be included in Greece’s national cultural development program. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
