Peru’s former president Ollanta Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia have been sentenced to 15 years in prison. This was reported by the BBC.
The president and his wife were found guilty of corruption — they received money from Brazil's Odebrecht construction company and the Venezuelan government to finance two election campaigns.
After the verdict was announced, Humala was handcuffed right in the courtroom. The judge also ordered the arrest of his wife, who did not attend the hearing; later it became known that Nadine Heredia had sought asylum at the Brazilian embassy in the capital Lima, AFP wrote.
Ollanta Humala served as president of Peru from 2011 to 2016. In 2022, he was summoned to court in connection with a massive corruption scandal involving Odebrecht, which may also implicate other former presidents.
Peru's former president Alan Garcia (1985–1990 and 2006–2011) committed suicide in 2019 when the police came to arrest him. Another former president, Alejandro Toledo (2001–2006), was sentenced last year to 20 years in prison for accepting millions in bribes.
The investigation into Peru’s 2016–2018 president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is still ongoing. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
