Pope Francis passes away at the age of 88: mourning declared in the Vatican

Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on the morning of April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 in his residence at Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell officially announced the pontiff's death on Vatican television.

"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sorrow that I announce the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Francis. Today, at 7:35 AM (local time), the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, returned to the House of the Father. His entire life was devoted to serving God and the Church. He taught us to live by the high values of the Gospel, particularly showing love, faithfulness, and courage towards the poorest and marginalized in society," – the Vatican News portal reported.

Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio) was elected Pope in March 2013, becoming the first pontiff from Latin America in the history of the Catholic Church. He succeeded Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned due to health issues.

Throughout his papacy, Francis became widely known and respected worldwide for his strong advocacy of social justice, environmental protection, and the rights of the poor.

In mid-February 2025, Pope Francis was hospitalized with bronchitis. His condition later deteriorated, and he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, requiring him to be placed on artificial ventilation several times. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi had previously mentioned the possibility of Francis resigning if he became unable to fulfill his papal duties.

On March 23, Pope Francis returned to the Vatican after a 38-day hospital stay. On April 20, he appeared publicly for the last time before thousands gathered at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, warmly greeting them on the occasion of Easter.

In his last speech, the pontiff called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of Israeli hostages, and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza residents. He also addressed the conflict in Ukraine, urging all parties to continue efforts toward achieving a just and lasting peace.
