Scientists have discovered an unexpected beneficial property of tomatoes
Lycopene, a natural antioxidant that gives tomatoes and watermelons their red color, is attracting the attention of scientists not only for its anti-inflammatory effects, but also for its role in combating weight gain. A new study by US scientists shows that eating tomatoes can reduce the risk of obesity.

Research - experiment on zebrafish

A group led by Samantha St. Clair, associate professor of biology at Northern State University, doctor of philosophy, conducted an experiment on zebrafish. The fish were fed different diets: regular food, high-fat food, as well as mixtures of tomato extract, lycopene and estrogen supplements.

“Tomatoes are rich in antioxidants, so we decided to study their effect on injury and inflammation,” says St. Clair.

The results were as follows:
- Fish fed a high-fat diet, but given tomato extract, gained less weight,
- Lycopene and estrogen supplements reduced blood sugar levels,
- Lycopene activated the breakdown of fat in the liver.
That is, lycopene is being recommended as a natural substance that accelerates metabolism and fights obesity.

The difference was noticeable in a week

The experiment showed that the effect of tomato consumption was observed in just 7 days. So, by adding simple and inexpensive tomatoes to the daily diet, you can provide the body with natural protection against weight gain.

The scientists now plan to analyze:
- The effect of food additives at different times of the day,
- The expression of genes responsible for estrogen metabolism and fat processing,
- The amount of lycopene in different tomato varieties and its effect on metabolism.

The results of the study show that adding tomatoes to the diet can not only control body weight, but also improve liver health, lower blood sugar levels, and reduce inflammation.
