On May 13, a national mood of mourning reigned in Uruguay - the country's former president, José Mujica, known throughout the world as "the most humble leader," passed away at the age of 89. Mujica would have turned 90 on May 20 this year.
Mujica was diagnosed with cancer in 2024. At that time, he openly explained his condition and announced that he would refuse treatment without any drama. At the beginning of 2025, he decided to stop therapy due to metastases. He made this known to the public - as always, in clear and courageous words.
José Mujica lived his last days on his small farm, surrounded by animals. He never lived in the presidential palace, did not waste state funds on state positions, and donated his presidential salary mainly to those in need.
From prison to leadership
The life of José Mujica is a true story. He began his political career in the radical left-wing movement "Tupomaros". He actively fought against the military dictatorship. Because of his activities, he was arrested several times and even sentenced to life imprisonment. However, he overcame this difficult path and, after 14 years in prison, began a new life.
After his release, he re-entered political life - first as a deputy, then as a senator and minister of agriculture. Having won the 2009 elections, he became president of Uruguay.
The rich legacy of the "poor president"
During the five years of Mujica's leadership, Uruguay's economy developed steadily, poverty levels decreased significantly, and major reforms were implemented in the areas of social justice and human rights. His activities are considered an example for many politicians around the world.
After his presidential term ended, he returned to the Senate, but soon after, he officially retired and voluntarily renounced his monthly payments from the state.
One of Mujica's last words was: "I am not rich, but I am happy. I have little, but I am grateful." With this statement, he taught millions of people a philosophy of life. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
