The European Union does not trust Putin: "If he wanted peace, he would have stopped the war immediately"
The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, has sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent statements. She believes that Moscow sees no real interest in peace talks with Ukraine through Turkey.

"If Russia really wants peace, why are Ukrainian cities still being bombed?" Kallas asked in a speech at the Democracy Summit in Copenhagen on May 13.

"Russia is playing with time"

The head of European diplomacy noted that more than two months have passed since Ukraine agreed to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire. However, no positive steps have been taken by Russia during this time.

"Russia is clearly playing for time, aiming to better prepare itself tactically. This is not a pursuit of peace, but a policy of prolonging the war," Kallas said.

“Can Putin sit down at the negotiating table?”

Kallas also expressed her opinion on the possible direct meeting between Vladimir Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. “If this meeting takes place, of course, it will be a good step. But I believe that Putin lacks such courage,” she said.

European leadership is vigilant

In recent weeks, a number of proposals have been put forward to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has suggested Istanbul for talks. Ukraine has agreed, the United States has supported it. However, Russia, according to European diplomats, is so far only talking, and in practice it is not ready to reduce military pressure.

The Zamin.uz editorial team believes that peace will begin not with words, but with practical actions. Otherwise, each delayed negotiation means new victims, new destruction.
