Five Uzbek men have been arrested in the Japanese capital Tokyo on suspicion of committing a series of serious crimes. This was reported by the local media outlet Tokyo Reporter.
It is reported that on December 30, 2024, a group of Uzbek youths led by 21-year-old Hasanboy Dusmatov attacked three foreign tourists in the Shibuya district of central Tokyo. Dusmatov punched one of them in the face, knocking him to the ground. Then his accomplices took the victims' wallets and bags and fled the scene. Personal belongings worth a total of 210,000 yen (approximately $1,400) were stolen in the attack.
The crime is currently under investigation. Hasanboy Dusmatov has refused to cooperate with police, saying, "I will not say anything until my lawyer arrives." The four other suspects arrested with him vehemently deny the charges against them.
Police said that four of the five men, including Hasanboy Dusmatov, who is believed to be the ringleader of the group, were found to be living in Japan illegally. During the investigation, it became clear that since August 2023, this group has been targeting citizens sleeping or drunk on the streets and stations in the most crowded areas of Tokyo, such as Shibuya and Shinjuku, and robbing them of their personal belongings and money.
The plan of this criminal group was even broader. It is known that they purchased a large number of iPhone smartphones from the victims using stolen credit cards. Later, these smartphones were resold, making an estimated 8 million yen (more than 55 thousand US dollars) in this way.
Hasanboy Dusmatov, the alleged leader of the criminal group, informed his associates about the planning and execution times of each crime through the Telegram application. This allowed them to synchronize their actions and carry out the attacks quickly and easily.
Currently, the investigative authorities are clarifying the guilt of the individuals involved in these crimes. They are also suspected of being involved in many other similar crimes in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
