Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that his country will soon officially recognize the independence of Palestine, reports Times of Malta.
Palestine already has an embassy in Malta, and the country supported the 2024 UN General Assembly resolution recognizing Palestine’s right to full UN membership. However, Malta has not yet formally declared its recognition.
According to Abela, the official statement will be made on June 20 during an international conference organized by Saudi Arabia and France with UN support. Malta’s representatives noted that their country will not be the only one recognizing Palestine at the event.
According to Axios, France is also planning to recognize Palestinian independence in June. French President Emmanuel Macron stated in an April 2025 interview with France 5 that he intended to make such a declaration “in the coming months.”
The HAMAS group described France’s planned recognition as an “important step,” while Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the recognition of what he called a “fake state,” referring to it as a “reward for terrorism.” Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
