Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has once again publicly confirmed that he will step down in 2029. In an interview with Al-Jazeera, the head of state said that this decision is connected with the will of the people and his personal mature position.
— I have said this before. I will end my presidential term in 2029. This is the demand of my people and my firm decision, — said Tokayev.
The president emphasized that he does not consider state governance to be a divine responsibility, but a trust given by the people.
— The president is not a messenger of God. He is an official elected by the people and serving his people. The presidency in Kazakhstan is limited to only seven years, — he added.
Reforms are a continuous process
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that Kazakhstan is consistently moving towards reforms, and this process is long-term and sustainable.
— We will continue to build Kazakhstan as a country of reforms. I am sure: we will implement any reforms necessary for our national interests. There are no obstacles to this process, — said the head of state.
It should be recalled that Tokayev won the 2019 snap presidential election with more than 70 percent of the vote. In November 2022, after the “January events,” another election was held, and he was elected president for a second time with 81.31 percent of the vote. The term of office in this election is set at seven years, and it will end in 2029.
Also, Tokayev has repeatedly emphasized in previous speeches that a seven-year term is sufficient for the pre-election program and planned reforms.
In conclusion, it is planned that the change of power in Kazakhstan will take place gradually, through systematic and democratic processes. Tokaev's keeping his word is considered an important sign of political stability in Kazakhstan. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
