Germany is set to make significant changes to police operations in order to make them more effective. According to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, a legal framework is being developed to allow the country's police to officially use stun guns.
He stressed that stun guns will not only allow for the rapid neutralization of offenders, but also allow for the situation to be brought under control without the use of firearms. At the same time, stun guns are less dangerous than batons and firearms in terms of the level of damage they cause to a person.
Dobrindt described this measure as an important and modern tool for ensuring the safety of police officers in public places:
“Today, threats against police officers have increased. In such situations, stun guns are an appropriate and necessary tool to protect human life.”
However, not all regions support this initiative equally. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the devices, while Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens was critical.
Currently, electric shockers are being used in some regions of Germany - Berlin, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. The new decision could see this experiment expanded nationwide.
Analysts believe that this innovation will increase the operational capabilities of the police, but it may also cause discussion and concerns from the point of view of protecting human rights. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
