At the G7 summit held in Canada, a statement by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz drew significant attention in the international political arena. He said he welcomed Israel’s precise and strong strikes on Iran with respect and described these actions as a service to the entire Western world.
In an interview with ZDF, Merz said:
“I have great respect for the Israeli army and government for making this decision. Otherwise, the world could have witnessed the horrors of the Iranian regime for months or even years. Perhaps we would have faced a regime in possession of nuclear weapons,” he said.
The chancellor stressed that Israel’s military actions serve not only its own security but also the security of Western allies, including Europe and the United States.
“This is Israel’s difficult mission to protect not only itself, but all of us,” he said.
Sharp Criticism of Tehran
According to Merz, the Iranian regime is spreading instability and destruction throughout the world. He emphasized that Tehran exerts its influence through groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Hamas in Gaza.
“The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 could not have taken place without the help and planning of Iran,” the chancellor said.
In his view, it is the Iranian government that is the main source of the current conflict. At the same time, he considers a diplomatic solution preferable to military methods.
Call for Negotiations
The German leader concluded: “If the Iranian government is ready to return to the international negotiating table, there would be no need for military intervention.” He called on the international community to resolve the situation peacefully.
Conclusion:
Friedrich Merz’s remarks are seen as some of the sharpest and most open statements in support of Israel’s actions at the international level. His words have led to serious discussions in US and European Union political circles. This raises new questions about the role of the Iran-related conflict in world politics.
