Doctors in the Gaza Strip report that the lives of hundreds of infants are at risk. Due to restrictions imposed by Israel on humanitarian aid, the shortage of baby formula has become a serious issue.
At Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, only one week's supply of formula remains. Special formulas have run out, and doctors are forced to divide regular formula among several infants.
Through the private company GHF, which delivers humanitarian aid, no infant formula is reaching Gaza. The small remaining amount of products is being sold on the black market at prices ten times higher than normal.
Many mothers are unable to breastfeed — they themselves are not getting enough to eat. According to UN data, more than 100 children are hospitalized daily in Gaza due to malnutrition.
Doctors regard infant deaths as the first and most severe sign of famine. American doctors have tried to bring special baby formula in their personal luggage, but there have been cases where it was confiscated at the Israeli border.
People are forced to wait in lines for aid, but it is reported that over 500 people have been shot and killed in such lines over the past month.
The World Health Organization and doctors warn: if the war does not stop and the borders are not opened, this tragedy will deepen.
“Infants are just skin and bones. We are on the brink of disaster,” says Dr. Ahmad al-Farra. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
