New Balance in the Caucasus: Is Russia Reinforcing Its Military Base in Gyumri, Armenia?

The geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus is once again escalating, reports euronews.com. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, Russia has begun taking measures to significantly strengthen its military base in Gyumri, located in Armenia. The source claims this move is aimed at further increasing Moscow’s influence in the region and shifting the security balance.

Additionally, it is noted that an order has been issued within Russia’s Southern Military District to specially select professional soldiers with high combat readiness for deployment. The selection process emphasizes the psychological resilience and experience of the personnel.

At the same time, Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied information about any strengthening of the Russian base in the country. However, Ukrainian intelligence asserts that such an order was indeed issued in Russia, and these actions are taking place as Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey continue to draw closer in their relations.

The Gyumri military base is located 100 km northwest of Armenia’s capital, very close to the Turkish border. Up to 5,000 troops serve there, and the base is equipped with MiG-29 fighter jets and modern S-300 air defense systems. In 2010, Russia and Armenia reached an agreement to lease the base until 2044.

Experts note that the strengthening of the Russian military base could present new challenges to regional security amid ongoing tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia. At the same time, Armenia is becoming more active in foreign policy and reviewing its participation in military alliances such as the CSTO.

Analysts point out that Azerbaijan is increasingly pursuing an independent geopolitical course, and resistance to Moscow’s “big brother” policy is growing. How the military and political balance in the region will change remains to be seen.
