660 Participants: Kazakhstan Sets Patchwork Quilt World Record
Kazakhstan has witnessed another historic event aimed at preserving and promoting national traditions — a world record has been set for assembling patchwork quilts. This was reported by Kursiv.media.

As part of a cultural project held in Almaty, a massive patchwork quilt was assembled on the Medeu ice rink at the initiative of the Alaman Quraq team. This beautiful traditional work was officially evaluated by representatives of the Global Book of Records (GBR).

GBR’s Chief Inspector for Asia and Africa, Kuandik Kudaybergenov, emphasized the significance and uniqueness of this initiative. According to him, “There are four main world record books, and Global Book of Records places special focus on cultural heritage. The application from Almaty drew our interest, as 660 quilters from all 20 regions of Kazakhstan participated.”

He also highlighted that the craft of patchwork quilting has a 2,500-year history, and supporting such cultural initiatives aligns with UNESCO’s programs for safeguarding intangible heritage.

According to Kudaybergenov, the uniqueness of this record lies in the fact that all quilts were made from the same material, color, size, and weight. No other record book in the world has registered such an event. The measurements were verified by specialists from the Czech Republic and France, and the final decision was made by the main office in Mumbai.

Among the 660 participants, the youngest was 6 years old and the oldest was 90. The group included 5 men, 24 children, and 17 teenagers. The largest delegations came from the city of Almaty (93 people) and Turkistan region (99 people).

According to Nurgul Abaykhan, the founder of the Alaman Quraq project, this traditional event has been held for three consecutive years, with a new record set each year.

– “In the first year, 200 quilters entered the Kazakhstan Book of Records. Last year, during the World Nomad Games, 450 participants made 450 quilts. This year, 660 people from across the country joined. All quilts were pre-made to a uniform pattern and joined together into one giant carpet,” she said.

The women involved are not only showcasing their craftsmanship but are also contributing to the promotion of national values, traditions, and centuries-old heritage. Their efforts are a step toward making the patchwork quilt a national brand.
