Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken an unexpected step on the international political stage in recent weeks. His initiative could open a new chapter in the history of nuclear issues.
According to Axios, sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that Putin personally addressed Donald Trump and Iranian officials. In that address, the Russian leader urged Tehran to completely abandon uranium enrichment.
Until now, Moscow had openly supported Iran's nuclear program. Russian officials had always defended Tehran's right to enrich uranium in the international arena. However, after the 12-day bloody conflict between Israel and Iran, the Kremlin's position changed sharply.
According to the report, after the war, Putin personally contacted the Iranian leadership and conveyed the importance of giving up uranium. This is now seen not only as Russia’s new position toward Iran but also as an important step for global security.
In addition, Moscow informed the Israeli government about this. One senior Israeli official said: “We know what Putin told the Iranians.”
It should be recalled that on June 13, Israel launched a wide-ranging attack targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, senior officials, and nuclear scientists.
In response, Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israeli territory. On June 22, the United States conducted airstrikes on several of Iran’s nuclear facilities. Two days later, a ceasefire was declared.
According to official data, 935 Iranians were killed in Israel's strikes. Iran's retaliatory attacks killed 28 Israelis.
In this context, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that Iran's nuclear program was “eliminated again.” However, U.S. media expressed skepticism, reporting that the program had only been delayed by a few months. Trump criticized those outlets, accusing them of spreading fake news.
Is Iran ready to give up its nuclear program in this process of negotiations and pressure? A united stance by Russia and the U.S. may determine how this issue will be resolved. Nuclear security is once again at the center of global political play. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
